Canada goose nesting season begins in late February or early March and brings additional challenges for property managers, land owners and business owners.
Canada goose populations are protected by state and federal laws and nesting season brings additional restrictions and deadlines for managing goose conflicts. Neither eggs nor active nests can be disturbed without permits and registration. Testing can be required to ensure that eggs have not developed past the stage where they can be destroyed.
Goose Nesting Season Facts
Begins in late February or early March and runs through June
Geese lay 1 egg every one and a half days over 10-14 days
5-7 eggs per clutch
Incubation begins after last egg is laid and lasts 28 days
When done properly, however, egg addling is a safe and effective method for managing Canada goose populations on your property.
It works by applying a coating of oil that prevents the embryo from developing but is not detectable by nesting geese, who will remain on the nest instead of populating a new one.
To do it legally, safely and effectively requires a federal permit in addition to plenty of training and experience. While geese are powerful birds and will defend their nests aggressively, they are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and it is illegal to disturb them or their eggs without authorization.
