Building Managers Join RAC for a Hands-On Lesson in Honeybee Management

A building manager’s job includes an unending variety of challenges, but it does have its sweet moments.
At a recent RAC lunch and learn presentation, members of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Indiana spent time with RAC owner Rusty Fields to learn more about best practices for managing honeybee populations. They also got a demonstration of honeycomb harvesting and left with jars of honey from Rusty’s hives. Some even “uncapped the honeycombs” as part of the harvesting process.
Professional Help for Managing Honeybee Conflicts
Honeybee management doesn’t have to be a source of anxiety for property managers, even if like some tenants, bees can get a little riled up at times. While they can pose safety and property risks, bees are also a critical link to environmental health and food production.

Balancing bee-friendly practices and property management means having a source of professional back-up for managing and sometimes relocating bee populations.
As property managers know too well, honeybee colonies are often drawn to the shelter and protection found inside walls and other building cavities and they don’t need much of an opening to find their way in. This poses a risk of stings and building damage and should be managed by pest control professionals trained in bee management, removal and preventive measures that include cleaning and sealing of nesting sites to prevent recurrence.
The successful management of bee conflicts is designed to ensure the safety of both humans and pollinators.
Bee-Friendly and Bee-Careful: Best Practices for Honeybee Issues
Other bee-friendly and building safe practices Fields recommended to the property managers include:
- Educating tenants and staff on both bee safety and the importance of bee-friendly practices
- Incorporating pollinator-friendly plants into landscaping
- Creating bee habitat areas
- When you see a swarm or other signs of bee infestation, call the professionals!
